Innovating Science chemistry kit is used to produce biodiesel, and features a two-phase process to produce small batches of crude biodiesel for demonstrating burning qualities biodiesel and vegetable oil. The kit includes an optional small-scale exercise for students to experience the full process of producing biodiesel to meet quality levels necessary for use in vehicles through a washing procedure. For hands-on learning, the kit has materials for 15 groups of students, including vegetable oil, methyl alcohol, potassium hydroxide, and microburners. Containers with sealable caps large enough to hold 200.0mL of liquid and distilled water are required for the washing procedure (containers and water sold separately). The kit has a teacher's manual and student study guide copymasters for instructional use, and a safety data sheet (SDS) packet for product information and handling procedures. The kit is suitable for age 13 and older with adult supervision, and meets the requirements for Department of Transportation (DOT) small quantity exemption 173.4, and conforms to 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 173.4 for domestic highway or rail transport only.
