Innovating Science forensic chemistry kit is used to practice detection of drugs. Students are "forensic toxicologists" for determining if chili ingredients from the school cafeteria were substituted with aspirin and made everyone who ate it ill, and perform a series of chemical tests, including tests on control acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), for detailed study. For hands-on learning, the kit has materials for 15 groups of students, including acetylsalicylic acid, chili ingredients, ferric nitrate solution, dilute Lugol's iodine, micro-reaction plates, and sodium hydroxide. The kit has a teacher's manual and student study guide copymasters for instructional use, and a safety data sheet (SDS) packet for product information and handling procedures. The kit is suitable for age 13 and older with adult supervision, and meets the requirements for Department of Transportation (DOT) small quantity exemption 173.4, and conforms to 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 173.4 for domestic highway or rail transport only.
