Of all the naturally-occurring metals, copper is one of the most useful and versatile. Evidence suggests that copper has been used by humans for over ten thousand years. Copper is used for architecture, and is used to build wiring, pipes, and plumbing fixtures. It can also be used in electronics and on circuit boards. As such an important part of our daily lives, it is important to understand how copper is formed and collected. While it is most often treated and refined from copper-bearing mineral ores, it can also grow in a pure elemental form. This is the rarest and most valuable form of copper as it requires the least amount of work to process. In this activity, students will create spcific environment conditions and examine the formation of native copper deposits over several days. Included in the kit is enough material for 15 groups of students to run the experiment, as well as a teacher's guide, student study guide copymasters, and material safety data sheets (MSDS).
