This demonstration allows students to learn about ampholytes. These are amphoteric molecules that contain both acidic and basic groups. In this particular demonstration two clear solutions are combined to produce a white precipitate that divides into two parts. As different solutions are added to the mix, dissolution of the precipitate occurs. Through these reactions students can see first hand that certain compounds react with both acids and bases.
