Description
  • EXPLORE TESTING NUTRIENTS IN FOOD || Chemistry kit that teaches students the basics of testing food for nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins
  • ENGAGING ACTIVITY || Students will use Benedict's solution, biuret reagent, iodine, and a fat-soluble dye to test provided samples
  • FURTHER EXPLORATION || This simple qualitative exercise can also be performed on food samples provided by the teacher or students
  • MATERIALS FOR 15 GROUPS || The set provides enough material for fifteen groups of students
  • INCLUDES ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS || Includes 25mL iodine/potassium iodine, 25mL biuret reagent, 25mL Benedict's solution, 25mL Sudan III stain (1.0%), 25mL vegetable oil, 10g soluble starch, 10g albumin, 10g glucose, teacher's manual, student study guide copy masters, and material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all included components

What's in our food, and how can we tell? With this kit, students will learn about carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, and how our bodies use them as fuel. Once they understand the concepts, students will perform their own tests on provided samples to see if the samples contain any of those nutrients. A simple qualitative test allows students to easily observe the reaction taking place, allowing for a quick grasp of food testing concepts. Students will perform tests using Benedict's solution, biuret reagent, iodine and potassium iodide, and a fat-soluble dye to hunt for starches, fats, proteins, and more. Kit comes with enough material for 15 groups of students, and comes complete with teacher's manual, student study guide copy masters, and material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all included components.
